ECBM Circuit Churches

The East Caribbean Baptist Mission (ECBM) Circuit of Churches in Antigua & Barbuda consist of the Central Baptist Church of Radio Range (St. John’s Rural South), the Tyrell’s Baptist Church of Tyrell’s Main Road, Tyrell’s (St. Paul’s), and the Covenant Baptist Church of Friar’s Hill Road, Mount Pleasant (St. John’s Rural North).

The ECBM Circuit of Baptist Churches exists for the purpose of glorifying our God with specific reference to the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). The Great Commandment challenges us to love God and our fellowman. The Great Commission challenges us to evangelism, bringing people into right relationship with the Son of God; to covenant community, bringing people into a right relationship with the church of God; and to discipleship, bringing people into a right relationship with the Word of God.

Our churches are confessional Reformed Baptist in faith and practice and hold to the Second London Baptist Confession of 1689. The churches of this Circuit are historically linked to the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC)and also affirm the Baptist Faith & Message (2000) of the SBC.

Central Baptist Church has ministered in Antigua & Barbuda since 1965. The church was led by six non-nationals, each serving for short periods for the first 20 years of its life. The founding minister was Pastor Cleo D. Morse of Texas (USA), an independently supported missionary of Southern Baptist roots. Since December 31, 1985, Dr. Hensworth W.C. Jonas has served as Pastor/Presiding Elder, the first Antiguan born national to serve in this role.

As the oldest surviving Baptist church on the island of Antigua, the church has given birth to the East Caribbean Baptist Mission, planted other churches and conducted a variety of ministries, including the Baptist Academy of Antigua, the Sovereign Grace Hour television and radio ministry, the Baptist Retreat Centre, and the Family Training Institute & Counselling Service.

Turn off Independence Drive at the Antigua Plumbing & Hardware Centre and drive through Ottos (Newtown) to Radio Range. It is a part of complex of pink buildings shared with the Baptist Academy on the hill overlooking the St. John's Harbour.

The Tyrells Baptist Church was officially constituted on November 29th, 1992 under the leadership of Dr. Hensworth W.C. Jonas. It started as a mission planted out of 27 charter members transferring from the membership of the Central Baptist Church. The ECBM purchased land on the Tyrells Main Road and constructed a simple chapel that was used for worship. This was later renovated and expanded into a state of the art worship facility. The church has grown over the years to be a well-known lighthouse of the Gospel of Christ in the wider community of St. Paul's.

The church is located between Builders Merchant Store and the Bargain Centre Supermarket on the way to Liberta on the Tyrells Main Road.

On Easter Sunday, 2004, the ECBM, under the leadership of Dr. Hensworth W.C. Jonas, constituted the Covenant Baptist Church. This move was initially motivated by a desire to reconstitute a disbanded Baptist Church in the Cedar Grove community in the north of the island of Antigua. Nine members formed the charter membership of the Church, transferring their membership from the Central and Tyrell’s Baptist Churches. The church was briefly relocated to rented facilities in the Coolidge area. By the providence of God, the ECBM was able to purchase property in the Longford’s Estate/Mount Pleasant community on Friars Hill road for the construction of a permanent facility for the Covenant Baptist Church. The Church building was dedicated on April 15, 2007.

Travel north from St. John's on Friar's Hill Road. Continue past Dunbar's Estate. Look for the church sign on the right, just before the Longford’s Estate Police Station.
